About Acupuncture
How does Acupuncture work?
Traditionally understood, acupuncture is based on the concept that Qi, loosely defined as vital energy, flows through channels in the body just as streams and rivers travel through the earth. If the flow of Qi becomes blocked or hindered from trauma, illness, or poor lifestyle, symptoms arise. Acupuncture activates the flow of Qi by stimulating the points along the surface and internal pathways called meridians.
Scientifically understood, acupuncture works by prompting a physiological response in the body that results in the alleviation of pain and inflammation, and a normalization of functioning. Acupuncture is not a belief system but a medical system; it is not necessary to “believe” in it for it to work.
Does Acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are extremely thin, sterile, disposable, stainless steel filaments, markedly different from needles used to give a shot. Acupuncture is often painless. Upon insertion, sensations vary from person to person. For some the feeling might be strong initially and then dissipate, or there might be the feeling of warmth, tingling or pulling. Most people find acupuncture calming and deeply relaxing. It is common to feel a sense of peace, and maybe a little tired, after a treatment. Dan has a lot of experience treating patients who are very sensitive to or fearful of needles (including his wife!) and always respects the comfort level of his patients.
Is Acupuncture safe? Are there any side effects?
Acupuncture is a safe and minimally invasive form of medicine. The needles are sterile, disposable and are FDA approved medical devices. Most people do not feel any side effects from treatment. Very rarely a small bruise may appear at the site of needling.
Are there any studies that prove Acupuncture is effective?
Acupuncture has been used continuously for over 4,000 years and this is itself a testament to its efficacy. While there are many Chinese and European studies showing the healing effects of acupuncture, research on the topic is relatively new in this country. However, high quality studies on the effectiveness of acupuncture are becoming more and more common in the United States. See links to connect to recent studies and articles in the news about acupuncture.
How long is a course of treatment?
Your initial visit begins with a confidential intake, which includes both your health and personal history, and continues with a diagnosis and treatment. In some cases an herbal formula might be recommended to augment the treatment, if the patient is interested. This first visit lasts approximately two hours, and subsequent visits are generally an hour to an hour and a half. Of course, we are able to accommodate time restraints. The number of treatments required to address an issue is assessed according to the diagnosis, the length and severity of the disease or problem, and the constitution of the individual.
Is there anything I need to do to prepare for the treatment?
In general, it is beneficial to refrain from drinking coffee or other stimulants before and directly after treatments. It can be helpful to wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing.
Do you accept insurance?
More and more insurance plans offer some coverage for acupuncture treatments. We are able to supply you with a “super bill” that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.
